The School-to-Prison Pipeline: Breaking Down Barriers to Education and Achievement Zero Tolerance for Zero Tolerance

Thu, April 13, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This paper examines the lifelong effects of the School-to-Prison Pipeline (STPP) and its impact on Black male students scholastic and social development. Through applying a qualitative approach and narrative analysis of data from a series of zoom interviews including three high school students to determine their attitudes about school discipline and racial climate both in class and on campus. Our findings can support leadership decisions on school policies that serve to remove students from the learning environment rather than educate them. The intent of this study is not to blame White teachers, it is meant to underscore the ways in which White teachers unintentionally sustain not only the systemic failure and academic underachievement of Black students, but also the STPP.
