In this paper I propose that youth participatory action research (YPAR) fosters transformational resistance (Solórzano & Delgado Bernal, 2001) which empowers youth investigators to advocate, but also to heal. Little is known about how YPAR activates healing for young people who aim to understand and challenge oppressive circumstances related to race, age, gender, and other intersecting forms of oppression. My paper explores this area by considering the relationship between transformational resistance and healing in an arts-based YPAR study with Latina youth artivists in an intergenerational theatre ensemble located in U.S. Southwest. This research aligns with the 2023 AERA Annual Meeting theme by reconceptualizing the restorative properties of transformational resistance so we educators can strive towards “creating systems that honor the full range of ways of knowing and developing, and of student needs…”.
