Dignity-affirming music pedagogy extends beyond learning to make music- towards centering music as an integral part of learning and connecting us as humans. This study explores adolescent youth’s experiences with music in a maker space. It focuses on how participants engage with music in a space where learners (who are not studying traditional western music) encounter musical experiences. Of particular interest is what the nuances of listening to and making music might teach us about how youth experience music in these learning environments. This is important because if we can understand ‘the how’ of music experience in these spaces, learning scientists can begin to design dignity-affirming pedagogies that intentionally leverage the benefits of music.
