Experiences of NCAA Transfer Athletes From Junior Colleges (JuCos): "There Should Be More of an Education Process"

Abstract

Many current National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athletes are transfers from community colleges, also known as junior colleges (JuCos). These 2-year institutions represent the largest U.S. post-secondary segment and enroll over 50,000 college athletes. Guided by the Transfer Receptive Culture framework, our study examined the transfer experiences of NCAA college athletes who started their studies at a community college. Using a case study approach, this study interviewed 11 NCAA Division I college athletes focusing on the academic and athletic obstacles they encountered in their transfer journeys. The following themes emerged: (1) NCAA rules and recruitment issues, (2) community college stigmas, and 3) athletic staff support.
