Validity Study Using Factor Analyses on the Mathematics Attitude Scale in TIMSS

Abstract

This article focuses on the internal structure of the attitudinal questionnaire items from TIMSS 2019 and investigates the validity of items using EFA, CFA, and multiple-group CFA. The scale has been reported as a three-factor structure for decades by the IEA. However, this study assumes the factor structure can appear differently depending on the country or culture. This research was conducted in five English-speaking countries to prevent translation effects. The factor loading values of two items were below .4 when using EFA. Thus, we performed CFA and EFA model from which deleted two items fitted greater than the others. Plus, metric invariance model based on EFA results was fitted better than the others when using multiple-group CFA.
