Schools that offer traditional teacher mentoring programs often pair beginning teachers with more experienced teachers, who then offer professional (and sometimes personal) support. However, when schools lack the personnel and resources to implement this type of setup, beginning teachers potentially lose a critical resource of support. This qualitative study examined what happens when panels of secondary students are paired with beginning teachers and then offer guidance on issues involving school culture, respectful treatment of each other, and educational support. Findings from a nearly year-long study examined how monthly discussions revealed several themes, including the effects of pedagogical choices on rapport, the notion of students as keepers of culture, and student desire for teachers to be more vocal in fighting intolerance.
