Advancing a Theory of White Teacher Candidate Development Toward Racially Equitable Practice

Abstract

The theme of AERA 2023 challenges scholars to question “from what evidence, if any, do [they] construct their positions about truth” and encourages scholars to draw on existing scholarship to advance consequential educational research. Reflecting this theme, we use existing literature to theorize white teacher candidate development towards racially equitable practice and provide evidence supporting the theory from a longitudinal, multiple case study of five white teacher candidates. Ultimately, recognizing the crucial role teacher practices play in racial (in)equity in education and the demographic imperative for such development given the current predominantly white teacher workforce in the United States, we seek to inform interventions that effectively prepare white teacher candidates to teach in ways that disrupt racial harm in schools.
