Financial aid is central for access to and completion of postsecondary education. As financial need rises, the availability of grant aid is particularly important in helping students attend college. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between institutional characteristics and grant aid data trends. Using IPEDS data from 2000-01 through 2019-2020, we examine trends in the percentage of first-time, full-time (FTFT) students receiving grant aid by institutional sector and state. Results indicate variable but overall increasing percentage of FTFT receiving grant aid funding across sectors and an overall consistent and positive relationship across states in our analysis between all funding types. Implications for policy and practice will be discussed.
