Women of Color Faculty and Experiences of Racial Hostility in the Classroom

Abstract

Women of Color faculty face a host of oppressive conditions within our system of white supremacist, capitalist patriarchy. These conditions often spill over into predominantly white college classrooms wherein students enter with expectations that are consistent with society’s relations of domination and western assumptions of hierarchy and competence. Drawing on Marxist-humanism and Critical Race Theory, we report on a critical qualitative, bricolage study that examines racial hostility in the classroom and the trauma that ensues. The group of participants and researcher sought to create community for support and collaboratively develop pre-emptive and institutional responses aligned to a transformative justice.
