"Dope, Phenomenal Black Men at My Reach": Exploring the Impact of Peer and Role Model Bonding in a Black Male Initiative

Sun, April 16, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 2, Huron

Abstract

Using homosocial bonding as the theoretical framework, this qualitative study sought to explore the benefits six Black undergraduate men experienced through their engagement in a Black Male Initiative (BMI) at a historically White institution (HWI). The men in the study underscored two primary benefits they received by being connected to other Black men in the BMI program: 1) Building Supportive Peer Relationships and (2) Gaining Role Models, which they felt attributed to their persistence, overall success, and future aspirations.
