The Role of Coordinators in Developing Diverse Learning Experiences: An International Partnership

Abstract

International partnerships allow for the flow of ideas, and the sharing of ways of knowing. Developing and maintaining such partnerships falls on the program coordinator (PC). There is limited knowledge about the experience and role of the PC while building international partnerships. The purpose of this narrative study was to investigate the roles and responsibilities of the PC in developing an international partnership, and how they fostered relationships between their educational leadership programs and international partners. A two-phase narrative and iterative design punctuated by a catalytic event was employed. Four participants shared their narratives. Five narrative blocks were extracted: Common purpose, possibilities of a symbiotic partnership, complexity and contextual challenges, dialogue and cultural adaptation, and the threat of financial challenges.
