Abstract

Practicing retrieval of information often produces better long-term retention and transfer relative to re-studying the information, a finding known as the testing effect. A scoping review was conducted in order to map the landscape of research on individual differences in the testing effect paradigm. The literature search yielded 17 studies that have focused on differences in cognitive ability (e.g., working memory, episodic memory, fluid intelligence), personal characteristics (e.g., test anxiety, need for cognition, grit) or both. The findings in these studies are mixed and numerous methodological and conceptual issues were identified. Recommendations for future research on this important topic include broadening the types of individual differences examined and improving the quality of research.
