Abstract

This paper is based on a virtual exchange program between the Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) at two universities, one in South Africa and the other in the United States. Through synchronous online discussions with preservice teacher participants, we were able to engage issues related to race/ethnicity and structural inequality in our post-apartheid and post-segregation education systems. The participants delved into the ways in which their P-12 and university experiences have been shaped by racial division in our distinct yet similar societies, in addition to discussing how race and inequity have influenced their motivations to become teachers. Here, we explore the impact of virtual exchange among teacher candidates for the development of cross-cultural knowledge that benefits teaching, learning, and research.
