Fri, April 14, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), SwissĂ´tel Chicago, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne 2

Abstract

Charter schools have existed for just over 30 years and what started as a lab to learn how to transform public education, has become a staple U.S. education. Charter schools continue to inform innovative practices in public education particularly around curriculum, instruction and culture. College access is another area where charter schools thrive, yet there is limited mention of the learning. The findings in this study highlight how charter high schools in Los Angeles are experiencing success with using their autonomy and innovation to increase the number of underrepresented students accessing higher education. Results corroborate with the success in higher education access and matriculation. The study highlights the overlap and unique practices of each charter school represented by participants.
