Animated Process-Transparency in Student Evaluation of Teaching: Effects on the Quality and Quantity of Student Feedback (Poster 51)

Abstract

While student evaluation of teaching (SET) typically suffer from low response rate and quality due to limited student participation, Higher Educational institutes often use SET as the main source of feedback to evaluate courses and teachers. Strikingly, however, (quasi)-experimental studies how to improve student participation in SET are very scarce. Scholars hypothesized that lack of transparency could potentially cause low faith in SET, resulting in low response rates and response quality. Hence, in two studies, we investigated the effect of an animation to increase SET process transparency, and its effect on students’ faith, response rate and quality. Results showed that increasing transparency via an animation can change students’ perceptions of SET and response rates, but not necessarily response quality.
