Nontraditional Students in an Online Early Childhood Program: A Pathway Toward Equity, Inclusion, and Access (Poster 8)

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

Using a Community of Practice (CoP) framework, the researchers sought out to understand students’ experiences in a new online teacher education program. The teacher education program was developed to respond to a statewide teacher shortage for teachers who already earned an Early Childhood Associates degree from a state community college. Findings suggest the importance of 1) understanding the transition of non-traditional students to the University online setting, 2) creating a culture of care and sense of community, 3) guiding students through the licensure assessments and barriers, and 4) understanding the importance of coaching and mentorship for students.
