From Community-Mapping to Engaging Community: Naming Community Assets

Sat, April 15, 2:50 to 4:20pm CDT (2:50 to 4:20pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This inquiry examines two teacher educators’ efforts to revise and implement a community mapping assignment in their respective preservice secondary education courses. With the support of critical friends, we sought to refine the assignment to improve our students’ capacities to authentically know and work with their school communities and their students from an asset-based orientation. Simultaneously, we endeavored to enhance our understanding of our own positionality and identities as teacher educators striving to effectively teach in communities that are dissimilar from those in which we grew up. Data includes our teaching journals, student surveys, and transcripts of student work sessions in which completed assignments were analyzed using our articulated learning goals.
