Abstract

Previous systematic reviews have shown the positive effect of online professional learning communities on teachers’ development, yet the affordances of technology remain unclear. We conducted a systematic review of 1,766 articles published between 2013 and 2022 and 20 met the criteria and yielded three major findings. First, these articles focused on primarily focused features of the community and teachers’ knowledge. Second, mixed-methods approaches were commonly used in these studies and an increasing number of studies employed advanced statistical methods and machine learning. Third, we identified four major affordances of technology: knowledge sharing, ubiquitous learning, multiple approaches of participation and engagement, and expanding the network.
