Investigating Postgraduate Clinician-Teacher Experiences in an Academic Family Medicine Health Team During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic is profoundly impacting healthcare and medical education. It poses unique challenges for practitioners in academic health centers who are responsible for both clinical care and residency education. To understand experiences of family medicine clinician-teachers (CTs) in a Toronto academic hospital family health team while adapting to COVID-19, we conducted interviews (7/32) using grounded theory methods. Four themes developed: Challenges (multitasking/fatigue, teaching/learning/system changes); strategies/opportunities; supports, and recommendations. Results are improving educational strategies, virtual learning, and teaching tools. They appear useful for trainee education, faculty development, and potentially patient care in pandemics and other situations requiring crisis management. CT knowledges and expectations influenced their COVID teaching experiences as did institutional contexts (hospital and medical school norms/practices) and socio-cultural contexts.
