Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Lobby - Level 3, Wrigleyville

Abstract

This study explores high school students’ perspectives on social justice and on social justice initiatives in their schools. The study focuses on the urban Canadian context and involves students in three urban cities, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Participants are 37 students from six schools, two in each city. The study takes a qualitative approach and employs semi-structured interviews. The interviews reveal that students are critical of the educational work done in their schools towards social justice, and that there are differences about how students engage with social justice and the issues they identify as pressing. The study adds to the fields of urban studies and social justice education by presenting a Canadian social justice dimension to urban educational studies literature.
