Abstract

While research has shown that undergraduate transfer students may encounter academic difficulties while adjusting to their new institutions, the experiences of students who transfer internally between campuses of a multi-campus university are not well understood. The goal of this study was to examine similarities and differences between internal transfer (i.e., from regional to main campus of multi-campus universities), external transfer, and non-transfer students in terms of their academic motivation, self-regulated learning (SRL) strategy use, and engagement. Results from a self-report survey administered in the fall and spring semesters of the 2021-2022 academic year showed a general pattern of similarities across all groups. We discuss theoretical and practical implications of findings for scholars and institutions seeking to support transfer student success.
