Doing the Work to Do the Work: Black Teacher Educators Practicing Healing-Centered Pedagogies

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

Grounded in testimonio methodologies, this study explored the personal learning and unlearning of two pre-service teacher educators engaging in healing-centered pedagogies. We, both co-author and participant, assert that there is a learning and unlearning that must happen in order for us to do the work of preparing future teachers. This learning considers personal histories, struggles, and successes as they inform pedagogical and curricular praxes. By moving away from an approach to teacher preparation in which teaching and learning are reduced to procedures and management, we hope that findings from this study support more equitable and just pre-service educational experiences rooted in a critical reading and re-writing of the world.
