Environmental Education From the Perspective of Academicians of Science Education: Current Status and Recommendations

Abstract

This phenomenological research aims to investigate the academicians’ views in the field of science education about environmental education. A semi-structured interview form was applied and descriptive analysis was used. According to the results, most of the participants stated that environmental education should start at preschool education level since the knowledge acquired in this period is the basis of future learning. They found environmental education provided in the current education system insufficient and inefficient since the absence of applications. They recommended to make environmental education course compulsory. Based on all these findings, it is suggested to give importance to train educators in environmental education and to give practical and compulsory environmental education courses in curriculums at all levels, starting from preschool.
