Teacher Candidate Paid Residency Programs: Reenvisioning Field and Clinical Placements as Borderlands

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Fairmont Chicago Millennium Park, Floor: B2 Level, Imperial Ballroom

Abstract

This mixed methods study examines one educator preparation program’s (EPP’s) development of a residency program in which 36 teacher candidates were hired as the teacher of record in one of five partner districts. Our goals were as follows: (1) to determine how residents performed in relation to traditional education cohorts; (2) to explore both groups’ self-efficacy as educators; (3) to examine how mentor teachers and university supervisors assessed control and experimental groups’ teaching abilities and professional dispositions; and (4) to explore the successes and challenges of paid residency programs. Such programs can help us to address teacher shortages, provide teacher residents with vital experience to assist with overall teacher recruitment and retention, and create new models of teacher education.
