Abstract

The author draws from research on Black engineering majors attending a selective university in the U.S. to highlight their pre-college experiences that led them to an engineering major. The author uses "engineering capital" as a framework to analyze participants’ pre-college experiences to identify factors that might inhibit or facilitate engineering success and persistence.
