Doing Humanizing Labor Relations in the Secondary Social Studies Classroom

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Chicago Ballroom X

Abstract

Directing students toward social transformation is a complicated process that involves attending to multiple intersecting factors within classrooms. We argue that revealing these factors and helping students identify where and how to disrupt emerging patterns of power involves more than incorporating "critical" curricular and instructional tools. We suggest that scholars and practitioners should give equal attention to the division of learning labor within the classroom community. To examine labor in the classroom, we looked to dialectical materialist philosophy and studied an eighth-grade social studies classroom where the participating teacher directed learning activity toward anti-racism.
