Abstract

We show our efforts to develop a scale to measure students’ learning experiences with knowledge-based chatbots in massive open online courses across three studies. In Study 1, we synthesized the current literature qualitatively and analyzed students’ open-ended responses to their experiences with a knowledge-based chatbot. As a result, we introduced the eight salient domains (i.e., enjoyment, self-regulation, social presence, teaching presence, co-regulation, behavioral intention, perceived ease of use, and cognitive presence) and items for each domain (n = 53). In Study 2, we refined the list of items to 30 items that garnered more than an 80% agreement rate among five experts. Lastly, we showed our plan of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses of the items in Study 3.
