Defining Disability: Student Perspective Shifts After Introductory Coursework in an Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Deafness

Abstract

Presenters will share methods used to prepare early childhood special educators and speech language pathologists to work with young deaf and hard of hearing children and their families, focusing on how graduate students in both programs were helped to become aware of their own implicit biases regarding disability and human intersectionality. Pre- and post-survey data from the Disability Attitudes Implicit Association Test (DA-IAT), the Symbolic Ableism Scale (SAS), and the Beliefs and Attitudes about Deaf Education (BADE) scale will be presented, highlighting attitude shifts and the connection to instructional materials. Participants will be invited to discuss application of instructional methods, materials and survey instruments in their own critical self-analysis, family counseling and interprofessional conversations.
