Abstract

Mathematics language routines (MLRs) are a tool to engage multilingual learners in rich instruction and curriculum; they allow students to access mathematics texts and to communicate mathematical reasoning. We investigated teachers’ learning opportunities while using MLRs and the opportunities and constraints teachers faced while using these MLRs. We qualitatively analyzed semi-structured interviews and Google Form surveys. We found our Math I teacher participants implemented and refined MLRs as an instructional practice over the course of professional development. Understanding teachers’ implementation and refinement of these MLRs, as well as their opportunities and supports to do so, helps the field to better understand how teachers are working to meet the needs of their multilingual learners.
