Preservice Elementary Teachers' Learning of Purposeful Questioning: The Nature of Advancing Questions

Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Event Centre, 1st Floor, Zurich C

Abstract

In an attempt to cultivate preservice teachers’ (PTs) questioning skills, we designed a module in which PTs practiced formulating advancing questions, explored the nature of their advancing questions, and identified the difficulties. We found that PTs in many instances struggled to create advancing questions of their own in response to specific student work, and their questions were not advancing, because they were irrelevant, vague, leading, or not tied to student work. We suggested next steps in order to address each of these difficulties.
