Abstract

This exploratory case study explored the use of intelligent personal assistants (IPAs) in a foreign language classroom, focusing on the interaction among a teacher, learners, and IPA, teacher’s roles, and collaboration with IPA. Using social network analysis and content analysis on two 50-minute language classes and focus group interviews, the study revealed that language teachers played a central role in the IPA-integrated classroom, including the roles as facilitator, group process manager, organizer, needs analyst, resource provider, and guide. Moreover, we found several examples of classroom orchestration in IPA-integrated language learning. The study provides implications on how human teachers can collaborate with IPAs in teaching students in foreign language classrooms.
