Decolonizing School Leadership Theorizing and Practice Across Contexts: Is It Possible?

Abstract

Research. has shown that next to teaching school leadership is an important factor in improving student learning and outcomes. This presentation explores the possibilities and tensions of a decolonizing school leadership framework. It draws on research conducted with school leaders in Canada, Jamaica and Kenya, contexts all impacted by colonialism. This qualitative study through the use of narratives examined school leaders’ leadership practices. Data were gathered from 45 principals and school heads across all three contexts. Findings of the study offer insights into how school leaders navigate their schooling and educational contexts, much of which colonial policies and practices that are still evident in many aspects of everyday school life. Decolonization as a workable framework for school leaders is examined.
