Studying Practices of Engaged Mindfulness and Antiracism Through Teacher Research

Sat, April 15, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Swissôtel Chicago, Floor: Event Centre, 1st Floor, Vevey 4

Abstract

In this presentation, we tell the story of our work as district-based teacher research facilitators over the past six years in bringing PK-12 practitioners together to study ways of becoming more mindfully aware in their daily lives as educators and increasing their commitments to equity practices. We share how these year-long research groups were structured and facilitated; how the focus on antiracist pedagogy deepened over time; and what we are learning from the teachers’ studies about how they make sense of the effects of mindful practices on their well-being as teachers as well as the way mindfulness informs their ability to notice, question, and disrupt patterns and systems of inequity in their classrooms and curriculum.
