Slam Poetry: A Search for Teachers' Voices and Power Within Teacher Education

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

This paper documents a six-year experience using slam poetry in a preservice English methods class, working with preservice teachers who are also learning the language, to potentially help them gain more confidence in their own voice in that second language. Data sources include video recordings of the slam poetry performances, blog posts, and retrospective interviews with some of the students who took this class. The in-depth analysis (relying on qualitative methods mixing Arts-Based Research, Poetic Inquiry, and Duoethnography) highlighted how students were able to move beyond their initial apprehension and fears about the experience to find their own voices through the topics and the sharing of poetry that happened in the class.
