Abstract
The objective of this content-analysis is to build from a previous study “A Content Analysis of Mental Health Discourse in Popular Rap Music” (Kresovich et al., 2020). This initial study investigated the prevalence and nature of mental health themes in popular rap music, which correlate with a time span of documented increases in mental health distress and suicide risk among young people in the US, as well as with young African American male individuals. This current pilot content analysis attempts to fill in the gap of years since the initial study, analyzing and coding the lyrics of 8 of the Billboard top Rap songs for 2019-2021, examining whether the trend of increasing references to mental health struggles has continued.
