Interrogating Dynamics of Language and Power in Visual Compositions

Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 7th Floor, Grand Ballroom Salon III

Abstract

Language and literacy teaching and learning is in the midst of a translanguaging turn (Garcia et. al., 2017) which focuses on students’ whole linguistic and semiotic repertoires in support of their meaning-making. This work draws on theories of dynamic bilingualism and heteroglossic views of language and texts (Garcia et. al., 2021). Here, we examine power dynamics for educational environments (ie: classrooms, schooling) as rendered by words, text, and images in graphic sequential novels (henceforth: comics), which are natural multimodal texts (Jacobs, 2013; Serafini, 2014). In this roundtable, we seek to build conversation about the (re)presentations of language and dynamics of power in a popular comics series.
