This study investigates the motivational barriers for Black female students in higher education. The relationship between academic stress and amotivation level is analyzed using data collected through online surveys comprised of a demographic questionnaire and three sets of validated scales. The theoretic framework that guides this study is Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory (2011), which provides a critical understanding of how self-efficacy and social environment affect the motivational level of Black female students at multiple institutions. The findings suggest that academic stressors are significant and positively related to the lack of motivation, which can negatively affect the retention of Black female college students.
