Collaborating for Equitable and Inclusive Campuses Through Consequential Research: Voices From the Diversity Ambassador Program

Sun, April 16, 4:40 to 6:10pm CDT (4:40 to 6:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This phase of a larger mixed-methods investigation explored the voices of participants to understand the benefits of a 5-year voluntary diversity professional development program for over 250 faculty and staff in an institution of higher education. The research team engaged institutional stakeholders to examine, reflect, and expand a platform for research, practice, and policy centered on issues of diversity. The researchers investigated ways in which this diversity program impacted the institutional climate though qualitative data analysis of perceptions of programmatic impact. Findings indicate significantly increased commitment as a community to advocacy, personal and professional development, and creating a university-wide inclusive campus climate. This information will assist educators seeking more inclusive campuses through diversity professional development initiatives based on consequential research.
