Thu, April 13, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: East Tower - Exhibit Level, Riverside West Exhibition Hall

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the level of preparedness of K-12 principals for the implementation of online instruction in their school communities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, the study sought to understand school leaders’ approach to the sensemaking of policies and mandates rendered during the COVID-19 school closures. Five principals and director of an educational leadership program were interviewed to share their lived experiences about their preparedness for online instruction.
Principals engaged in an online professional learning series to support online teaching practices as well as provision of a rubric to evaluate instruction. The participants expressed that inconsistent professional learning and sensemaking difficulties contributed to the lack of preparedness for online instruction and minimizing student learning disruption.
