Examining Local (E)Quality of Environmental Education Services to Schools Using Social Network Analysis

Abstract

Local realities of environmental degradation vary. Local providers of ESE can communicate a "local truth" to schools. It is also at the local scale that ESE policy integration is shaped, but local studies of ESE are lacking. Our research practice partnership (RPP) with the San Mateo County Office of education provided insight into ESE integration patterns. We developed an SNA model to measure the connections between schools and ESE local providers. Our findings show that connections increased in number and quality in correlation with county networks' initiatives. In addition, we found a parabolic pattern of inequality, whereby schools with high socioeconomic status are more likely to get ESE services, while schools in the middle are less likely to receive them.
