Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

This study contributes to current challenges in multi-professional contexts by exploring an interprofessional dialogue between educators and social welfare workers. The objectives were to: create an interprofessional collaboration (IPC) model for improving the educational experiences of children in care using cultural activity theory; explore how this model informs the discourse of professionals involved in the educational experiences of children in care and identify the strengths and weaknesses of current IPC using the model. The “historically accumulating structural tensions” that existed between educators and child welfare workers encouraged the group to use relational agency to take responsibility for their own professional development, generating a different form of collaboration. Relational agency was manifest when professionals collaborated at the start, representing an “early win”.
