Abstract

Collaborative concept mapping refers to the process of constructing a concept map with two or more individuals. While the field has observed an increase in the interest and use of collaborative concept mapping to support the acquisition of retention of learning, inconclusive results have been obtained. Thus, this comprehensive meta-analysis summarizes the effect of collaborative concept mapping from 30 primary studies providing a total of 105 effect sizes. Potential theory-driven moderators of the effect were also examined. Results showed that collaborative concept mapping is effective for promoting learning and the summarized effect was moderated by the structure of collaboration and group size. Limitations and future research directions are discussed, as well as theoretical and practical implications.
