Abstract

In this study, we examined the effects of discussion prompts with feedback within a bilingual e-book on parent-child shared reading for young English language learners. In a randomized control trial, 107 parent-child pairs were randomly assigned to read a multimedia English storybook with or without discussion prompts twice at home. Children in the discussion-prompt group outperformed the control group on story comprehension and retelling, but both groups showed comparable gains in English vocabulary. Our study provided a critical piece of evidence to support the value of this design feature in promoting dialogic reading and story comprehension in a second language learning context.
