This paper combines aesthetic experience theory, pedagogies of care, and case studies to reflect on and discuss ways in which secondary school fine arts education can be sites for truth, belonging, and lived experiences. Our exploration focuses on the potential of slam poetry and consent-based practices in drama education to generate new forms of care and belonging at school. By providing space for exploring students’ lived experiences through artistic and creative outlets, students can navigate and respond to social justice issues such as race, gender, and class.
