Randi Engle's Legacy: A Systematic Review of Research on Productive Disciplinary Engagement and Expansive Framing (Poster 7)

Abstract

The design principles developed by Randi Engle (1965-2012) and colleagues for productive disciplinary engagement (PDE) and expansive framing are among the most consequential to emerge from situative theories of learning. Consistent with the AERA 2023 theme and RFP, this paper critically reviews the published research testing, applying, and extending these principles. Given the more than 2700 publications referencing Engle’s work, we found the empirical support for Engle’s principles to be surprisingly modest. We conclude that additional substantiation is warranted, particularly studies adopting experimental and comparative designs. That said, PDE and expansive framing have proven useful as theoretical constructs for designing more engaging and generative learning environments.
