Abstract

There are growing concerns that shadow education may reproduce educational inequalities. However, previous literature shows mixed findings regarding the association between private tutoring and student achievement. Using data from PISA 2018, this study sets out to examine the effects of three types of private tutoring (enrichment, remedial, and study skills instruction) on reading, math, and science achievement. After accounting for student background information such as family socioeconomic status, results of the multiple regressions show variation in the relationship between private tutoring and student outcomes across different subjects and between Greece and South Korea. The findings underline the need to account for the different types of private tutoring and different educational systems when evaluating the effects of tutoring.
