Evaluating Authentic Marine Science Camp Experiences as STEM Pathways for Underrepresented Audiences (Poster 57)

Abstract

As underrepresented students are less likely to pursue a science degree or career, engagement in informal science experiences can establish the desire, skills, and confidence these students need to pursue and excel in science.This study evaluated how learning marine science in a situated context impacts students’ attitudes and perceptions of science and science careers through the use of a formal survey and a modified Draw-a-Scientist test. Results suggest that although interest in and value placed on science did not change after the camp, students’ confidence in their science abilities and knowledge of marine scientist’s work increased significantly. These results can assist informal educators in engaging underrepresented audiences in marine science as a pathway to increase diversity within science careers.
