The "Truth" About Black Fathers: Their Influences on Their Black Sons' STEM Trajectories

Sat, April 15, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), Sheraton Grand Chicago Riverwalk, Floor: Level 4, Sheraton Ballroom IV and V

Abstract

Black fathers are an integral part of their sons’ lives, and this crucial impact propels their sons’ science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) trajectories. In this case study, ten Black male STEM majors described this paternal impact on them. Drawing from the theoretical frame of critical race theory (CRT), two salient themes were brought to the fore: Black fathers as role models and Black fathers as STEM champions. As such, this study contributes to scholarship on Black fathers and Black male students in STEM. In so doing, it presents a “truth” about Black fathers that is often conspicuously absent in a sizable portion of the education research literature and societal discourse writ large.
