Abstract

This study examined the dynamic relations between phonological awareness and print knowledge, which are among the core elements of early literacy and reading. The data of this study comes from the Nemours BrightStart! (NBS!) Project with a sample of 281 preschool children. Latent change score modeling approach was used to explore the dynamic relations. First univariate models were fit to the data using the latent change score modeling approach to model the growth of two constructs. Then, to investigate the coupling effects, bivariate latent change score models were fit to the data. The results of the bivariate models indicated a unidirectional coupling from phonological awareness to print knowledge.
