Abstract

Technology education (TE) involves the creating, making, and doing aspects of learning. The research reported in this paper examines how pandemic-related emergency remote teaching (ERT) manifests a ‘disorienting dilemma’ for technology educators. Through a multilevel mixed methods study with pre-service and practicing teachers, this research illustrates that ERT had a significant negative impact on TE, severely limiting psychomotor outcomes and negatively impacting affective and cognitive objectives. Further, experienced teachers suffered a more significant decline in teaching sense of efficacy (TSE) than teacher candidates (TCs). As a bridge to the future, this research offers a blended learning design framework for TE that engages both flexible delivery modalities while supporting the sustainability of TE creating, making, and doing opportunities for students.
